Some families had Scrabble Night, Backgammon, Trivial Pursuit to bring them together, and so did mine, but we also had VIDEO GAMES.
Gaming brought my family together!
I was first introduced to video games by my dad who brought home an Intellivision back in the day. Remember those? We played that thing till it busted and I was an absolute TRON: Deadly Disc fanatic. After that it was the Commodore 64 and I cannot count the hours I wasted playing Dungeons and Dragons. That game used to drive me nuts but I loved it.
Years later it was the Nintendo and specifically Super Mario Bros. It was the obsession of the entire family until Super Nintendo came out, which is when I got heavily into Legend of Zelda and Doctor Mario.
Then came the era of the home computer and the internet and my dad introduced us to Civilizations and soon after that Age of Empires. Then the mother of them all....Starcraft! I don't play WoW but put me in front of Starcraft and I am instantly drawn in. I love the games of strategy more than blow em up action and heavy graphic games I guess.
Now in the era of WII and Xbox, PS3 and such I admit my gaming has gotten quite light. I enjoy the WII a lot for the fact it allows more interaction between a group of people and for those of us living in colder climates where winter weather can keep you cooped up indoors, the WII can be a great way to stay active while avoiding going squirrelly.
Since gaming has always been something of a family thing in my house growing up and now with my own small family, I've begun to introduce my kids to games. Both new and old as my son has cracked Age of Empires and Starcraft both and gone on to become a little Halo wiz. It's kind of funny that movies and shows I loved as a kid, my children can't be bothered with, but show them an old video game and they are intrigued and get sucked in.
I think that's the test of a really good game, if years, even decades later it can still gain the interest of new gamers. That isn't to say we don't also enjoy a few good board games or card games now and again, those are still very popular, but along with the social interaction that board and card games provide, it's safe to say video games are starting to become a good addition to family fun night!
Hi, I'm TBQ and I'm a mom and a gamer! And my kids haven't turned into Borg drones yet.
Game on!
